Which note is on which button
Charts for the boxes most players have, drawn from the same layouts Squeezebox Studio uses. Each one gives every button's push and pull note with its octave, the basses, and the places where makers do things differently.
- D/G melodeon
The usual English melodeon: a D row outside and a G row inside, with the home notes on button 3.
- G/C melodeon
A fifth lower than a D/G, with a G row outside and a C row inside: the standard Hohner layout.
- B/C button accordion
The Irish box. Two rows a semitone apart, B outside and C inside, so nearly every note is there somewhere.
- D/G melodeon, Anahata layout
A D/G with a fourth-button start, the home notes moved to button 4 and a full G scale down to the G below.
Reading the charts
Buttons are numbered from the chin end of the row, the end nearest your face as you play. The outside row is the one furthest from the bellows. In tab, a ′ after the number means the inside row, so 3′ is the third button of the inside row.
Octaves use scientific pitch, where middle C is C4. The G on button 3′ of a D/G is G4, the G above middle C.
If your box doesn't match any of these, it may have a different accidental, a fourth-button start, or low notes in place of accidentals. Each chart says which variations are common.
